We are loving this beautiful Rhdora and Jim’s wedding at Norwich Castle followed by a wedding reception at historical venue at The Great Hospital nestled in the Norwich Cathedral Quarter. The couple planned the wedding in just 6 months, and it was a beautiful celebration of love.

The newly wed Rhodora tells us how they got on with their planning and shares their gorgeous wedding images by Ellie Gillard. Grab a cuppa and enjoy!

WEDDING PLANNING

We had a short-ish engagement Jim proposed at the end of April and we got married in October. A lot of our decisions came easily considering we didn’t have loads of time. We really enjoyed picking the venue. Being new to Norwich it was a great way to find little hidden gems in the city. We stumbled across our venue during a stroll through the city and though it would be a lovely place for a wedding, so when we found out that they were available, we thought it was meant to be. Our friend Mim ever so kindly helped us with our wedding cake. As a foodie extraordinaire she worked with us to get the perfect cake and possibly the most delicious vegan cake as well! Jim’s family was a great source of support and encouragement. The amount of time you can spend gathering ideas on Pintrest and Instagram is amazing. For us the most enjoyable part of the process was finding ways to incorporate our personalities into the big day. Also spending time together making our himmeli favours.

WEDDING THEME

We didn’t have a particular theme in mind just more of an idea of the feeling we wanted to create for the big day. We wanted to it feel intimate and a bit whimsical. The venue itself is so lovely that it didn’t need a lot of decoration at all so it was a matter of finding the right details to bring it out. It has two big fire places that we thought would be perfect for October. While looking for the right props I found One Curious Dream which had pretty much everything we needed. After sitting down with Jo and the team they completely understood the vision. They were brilliant at pulling together the right props to tie in the look and helped us with a few of the bigger makes like our foliage hoops! We have a few friends with kids and wanted to make sure we had lots of fun things for the little ones like the wigwam village, games and lots of treats.

Rhodora’s Wedding Tips

Lists – write and list everything you need to do. Your lists will be lifesavers and as the planning moves on, you will find it is very gratifying to tick things off. The best advice I got was to do things our way. The people you invite are there to support you and be with you on your big day.

THE WEDDING DAY

A couple of my friends and I got up at the break of dawn to bring the last minute decorations / wedding favours to the venue. As we added a few last minute touches, Jim checked into the our hotel and picked up the bridal party flowers and the rings.

When the ladies and I finished off at the venue we went back to the house to get my hair and make up done. We held our ceremony at Norwich Castle so Jim welcomed the guests as hey arrived. I just about made it to the venue on time due to Saturday traffic brought about by the football. Our photographer was already there snapping away as I went to hide in the waiting room.

My mom and dad walked me down the aisle which I thought was really special. The actual ceremony went so quickly but all I can remember was smiling through it all.

The only face I could see properly walking into the room was Jim’s.

After the ceremony we took our group photos by the castle (on a very windy day) but it was all so lovely. Everyone went off to the reception and Jim and I had some photos taken while walking through the city .

Finally we joined our guests at the reception, for drinks and chats. Our speeches were done just before the dinner in an informal setting which really helped them to flow and for the speakers to make them feel informal and relaxed.

Once speeches were over, we walked through to the dining hall. We wanted to keep it really casual so we chose not to have a seating plan as most of our friends and family are all easy going. There was a little section set aside for the little ones to keep them entertained. It had a selection of activity books, sticky fake tattoos, dinosaurs and their own buffet.

As we wanted to make sure we had time to chat with everyone Jim and I made sure we spent some time with everyone in the room after having a few nibbles. It was a great time to catch up with people and breathe a sigh of relief as the food was delicious and everyone was having a great time. We then cut the cake, had the first dance which was when the party really started!

WEDDING DAY TIPS

Make sure to have little moments with your partner on the day as everything will be moving so fast – especially at the wedding reception.

With all the planning and making sure everything is perfect try to remember to keep ‘wedding waste’ to a minimum – if you can hire/borrow it – you should totally do it. It really helps with clearing things out post wedding and you really don’t want a million wedding bits laying around forever.
