Holkham Hall Wedding // Fayrouze + Richard

Fayrouze admits she’s not much of a delegator and loved planning hers and Richard’s big day. A lot of effort was taken to find those little details, trawling Etsy for the soap wedding favours and invites. There was no theme as such, just a collection of mismatched things that Fayrouze loved and worked into the day, from a geometric wall hanging with copper pipes, a tie-dye table cloth on the drinks station, gold brush table numbers and glass jars of flowers.

This stunning stately home wedding was featured inner last issue of Norfolk Brides Magazine and we thought it is about the time we share the couples full story in their own words illustrated by timeless photographs taken by James Rouse

The Proposal

We met the old fashioned way - through friends at the pub…

I was procrastinating instead of doing re-sit assignments after the first year of my law degree and went to the pub to see my friend, her boyfriend and his friends. Richard was one of the friends. We’ve been together 7 years and have two little boys together - Caleb (nearly 5) and Gideon (2.)

Richard booked us a surprise trip to Iceland in October 2013. I knew we were going away to somewhere cold but he managed to keep it secret (until letting it slip the day before we went!).

He proposed right at the bottom of a waterfall (Skogafoss) as we were being splashed with freezing cold water. His original plan was to propose while we were watching the Northern Lights but they didn’t happen for us while we were there so this was a pretty good Plan B! I didn’t see it coming at all, especially seeing as before I’d noticed he had the ring out I was adjusting our son’s hat on his head not paying any attention!

Wedding Planning

We took around a year to plan the wedding. We got engaged in October 2013 and our second son was born in August 2014, so we were a bit too busy to think about it properly for a while!

We booked Holkham Hall in June/July 2015 and went from there. I did the majority of the planning myself, Richard works away so his only job was to get the men’s suits ready. He did lend a hand but I’m not much of a delegator. My favourite part of the planning was choosing the flowers. I had a long appointment with Jo from Constance Rose in her kitchen where we drank tea and looked at how all of the flowers would work together. I also loved trawling Etsy for suppliers for little bits and pieces like our soap wedding favours and our invitations.

We didn’t have a theme as such - I just wanted to source things I loved and worked them into the day. We had a geometric wall hanging with copper pipes, a tie dye table cloth on our drinks station, gold brush lettered table numbers, glass jars of flowers. It was a bit of a mismatch but I think it worked as it was everything I loved all in one place.

"Don’t make lists on scrap pieces of paper - they will get lost! I really thought as a mother of two young children I was pretty organised but I quickly found out that is not the case! "

YOuR WEDDING DAY

After a very stressful morning of getting ready (10 adults and 4 children in one room!) and after heavy rainfall all morning, we were told that the weather was dry enough to have our ceremony outside at 2pm.

Our ceremony was beautiful  and after having some photos taken at the Temple and milling around a bit, we made our way down to the Walled Gardens for our reception in a marquee. We had canapes, Pimms, beers and cloudy lemonade while Jay - our singer performed an acoustic set.

We took some official family photos and then sat down for our speeches and some dinner. After a lovely meal (we had beef bourguignon and dumplings, and chicken Thai green curry served in big bowls in the middle of each table with rice) Richard and I went for our couples portraits.

Holkham is such a stunning venue with so many places to take photos! We must have been gone a while as when we got back to the Walled Gardens some people were about to leave thinking we weren’t coming back! I then went off with my bridesmaids for our photos which are some of my favourites of the day! When all of the photos were done we cut the cake and had our first dance "Last Night on Earth" by Green Day.

 It was the perfect day!
