Fishley Hall Wedding // Megan + Carl

04 August 2017 / Real Weddings

Brought up in the countryside, Megan knew that she wanted to bring that into the day, with lots of flowers, trees (her stepfather cut down his best tree for the wedding arch) and handmade elements. From that starting point and considering the beautiful location at Fishley Hall, Megan and Carl began a mood board on Pinterest and it grew organically from there.

The day was exactly how they planned – laid back and relaxed, filled with smiles and laughter.

We have asked Megan and Carl to share their story and tell us more about their engagement and how they went about planning their nuptials.

Before the big day

Carl: I spontaneously popped the question whilst we were having a morning swim at The Badeschiff, a swimming pool floating in the River Spree, Berlin. It was very early one morning and the sun was still rising. We were by ourselves in the water at the time and the air was nice and fresh.  I had arranged the surprise trip to Berlin but I hadn't planned on proposing. I would have happily married Megan any day from when we first met. Marriage itself wasn't a big decision; it was just letting her know how much she meant to me. I knew a long time ago that I wanted to be with her forever. We went out and bought a beautiful promise ring later that day. The engagement ring came later.

We saw the breathtaking Fishley Hall for the first time in January, swiftly booked it thereafter, and got married in July! So not long at all. We loved that it was a blank canvas as Megan and I both have creative backgrounds, so we were keen to get stuck in and make it as bespoke as possible.

We've enjoyed being inventive and thrifty, yet not compromising on design. We love spending our evenings crafting together, and bouncing ideas off one another. Carl made the invites, which were just beautiful. Luckily I have a very crafty family too, we made everything from flower arrangements down to the wedding cake.

DID YOU HAVE A WEDDING THEME?

I was brought up in the countryside, spending longs days exploring and getting lost.   We wanted to bring that into the day with lots of flowers, trees and handmade elements.

From that starting point and considering the location, we began a mood board on Pinterest and it grew organically from there.

For us, most of all it was important the day was relaxed and fun for our guests. Family is very important and we wanted to celebrate that as much as anything else.

Any wedding planning tips?

Megan: "Stick with your gut and go with what you love. Your instinct is always right."

Carl: "Megan had an Excel sheet with all the money we had spent for the Wedding. It's easy to get carried away, it's such a big industry, with so many nice ideas and possibilities. To save ourselves any headaches later down the line, we stuck to the budget and balanced costs as best we could."

THE BIG DAY

The ceremony and reception were both held at Fishley Hall, in the old Grain Barn, surrounded by 350 acres of idyllic Norfolk countryside.

Although the ceremony was at 2:00 my sister, mum and I had a 6 am wake up call. We had to be up to do all the outside floral decorations, including the wedding arch, and put the final finishing touches on the cake, set up the chairs for the ceremony as well as make Pimms and lemonade. Luckily as the morning progressed we had a few more helping hands. This was all before making a start on ourselves. But these moments added to the wonderful memories.

Luckily the rain held off and we had a beautiful outside ceremony, the first civil ceremony ever at Fishley. We extended the walk to the isle by walking around the outskirts of the barn, to the ethereal piece Vow by Juliana Barwick from the album Matrimony remixes, followed by the throwing of the handmade confetti – made by us of course!

Our guests the had an opportunity to enjoy  Pimms and canapé’s by The Humble Pie Company, a trio of gentlemen who made the long trek from Sussex. Followed by a banquet of pies and mash fit for kings.

Everyone loved speeches from the dads, best man and a tombola by the groom (the only thing I couldn’t control him over) There was not a dry eye in the barn.

Our First Dance was to Francoise Hardy Le Temps De L’Amour, which played simultaneously to a projection from Moonrise Kingdom, it really is us  with a big finish with a magical sparkler send off.

The day was exactly how we had planned and more wonderful than we could have ever imagined – laid back and relaxed filled with smiles and laughter while surrounded by our dearest family and friends. It doesn’t get better than that!

Any tips for the big day itself?

Megan:

"I received this advice on the morning of my wedding from a good friend and I will pass the same advice on… ‘when you wake up on your wedding day don’t stress about anything. Anything little that goes wrong (not that it will) won’t matter. Relax and enjoy. It goes sooooo quickly. Enjoy every minute.’ You can’t get better advice than that. Oh and I might add ‘make sure you have a moment together as husband and wife’."
