Michelle & Peter's Ickworth House Wedding

06 September 2014 / Real Weddings/ Wedding Planning

I am so excited to finally be able to showcase this beautiful Ickworth House wedding at Bury St Edmunds in Suffolk captured by Rob Dodsworth photography. It has been sat in my inbox for quite some time now and due to never-ending 'to-do' list I never seem to have found time to share it with you.

Michelle and Peter got married on a bright sunny winter’s day on Saturday 22nd February 2014 and  here is their beautiful wedding day described in their own words...

They met...

... back at school, aged around 12 and 13, and writing letters to each other, but never getting beyond friendship. After going their separate ways in life, Michelle made contact in 2010 whilst back living in Norfolk finishing her PhD, with Pete having moved to Bath only two weeks earlier to begin his own PhD. Pete still had the Eiffel Tower keyring Michelle had given to him 14 years previously and although older and wiser, the feelings for each other hadn’t changed. And the rest is history… although Michelle never lets Pete forget that it took 15 years for them to get together!

The Proposal

Pete popped the question in July 2012 while on holiday in Toronto, which included a few days in New York for sightseeing and staying with friends. On their last day in New York Peter and Michelle were in a luxury hotel and went for a rickshaw tour around Central Park, with Pete proposing on a lovely sunny day at the Bethesda Fountain.

"The rickshaw tour guide, advising us of various proposal hotspots around the park, was the first to know of our engagement – though we didn’t mention that we’d got engaged only minutes before him asking us!"

Wedding Inspiration

"We didn’t have a theme in the conventional sense, but we set out to achieve a personal feel to the day and to not be bound by tradition for the sake of it."

To achieve the feel couple wanted, they planned every detail and utilised their creative skills to make lots of items including all of their stationary, place cards with a personal message for each guest, bespoke wedding favour coins, handmade bunting for the bar area and a wedding message post box model of their house. It was important to Michelle & Peter that they supported charities where possible -  local WI made their wedding cake and wedding flowers were donated to a local hospice followed by donation from the day were donated for Samaritans.

Favorite Moments

It is Pete’s favourite memory of the wedding day -  seeing Michelle in her wedding dress as she walked in the ceremony room in her beautiful wedding dress looking absolutely breathtaking.  One of Michelle’s favourite memories was having her family from all over the world in one place, her mum giving her away more the most precious one of all - the sense of happiness and strength of emotion the moment she walked in to the ceremony room to see her momentarily husband to be waiting for her. Both Micelle and Peter also share the fond memory of and being able to relax and watch everyone enjoying themselves and celebrating the biggest day of their lives together.

Advice for Newly Engaged Couples

While Michelle feels that their wedding day couldn’t have gone better there were still several things that went wrong before the big day which were out of their control.

"Our advice is to be organised and focus on what really matters, you can still have a great day whether or not it’s your original plan. The quality of suppliers can make all the difference and spending money where it’s necessary can be key to achieving your vision. We enjoyed making things, which saved money and added personality, but be realistic about what you can feasibly do and the time it will take. And finally, it’s a cliché but the day does go quickly, so enjoy it! "
